KH Chemistry Sneak Peek

  • Planning
    • Content Comparison
The Content Comparison page offers a comparison between where concepts are covered in a traditional curriculum and the KH Chemistry curriculum.
    • Essential Questions
One or more of these eight Essential Questions will be raised within each chapter.
    • Pacing Guide
Each chapter Pacing Guide includes essential questions pertinent to the chapter, as well as chapter objectives, pacing suggestions, and activities.
    • Chapter Planner
The Chapter Planner at the beginning of each chapter outlines the sections, teaching tips, demos, learning activities, lab or activities, inquiry activity, practice questions and additional labs found within each chapter.
  • Chapter View
    • Introductory Activity
The Introductory Activity introduces the students to the the chapter's real-life topic, as well as talking about it. The activities encourage students to brainstorm their own ideas or opinions, then to share with partners or small groups, and finally, to share with the entire class. The progression from individual to group engages all students and builds confidence in their ability to share ideas within a group of people.
    • Section Objectives
The beginning of each section is outlined by the Section Objectives.
    • Teaching Tips
Teaching Tips provide the teacher with practical tips and suggestions for teaching the section.
    • Practice
Most sections contain Practice questions or problems. These practices often include a few questions or problems that apply the new concept to the overall topic of the chapter. Answers to the Practice questions are nearby for the teacher.
    • Examples
Examples are not worked within the text itself but in "Example" boxes. They include sample questions, answers with the reasoning behind the answers.
  • Labs
    • Labs (Student Edition)
This text uses a mix of Labs that lean more toward discovery or more toward verification. This mix of approaches allows students to develop critical thinking and analysis skills, while still providing them with labs that teach common laboratory techniques.
    • Labs (Teacher Edition)
The wrap-around Teacher Edition includes clear instruction on helping guide the students through each Lab experience, including goals, time needed, materials, tips and possible procedures.
    • Inquiry Labs
Each chapter contains at least one, if not more than one, Inquiry Lab activity where students design their own procedure and data analysis. In later chapters, less instruction is provided as students become more competent in lab design. Students develop scientific process skills -- learning how to "do science."
  • Need to Know
    • Need to Know Approach
Rather than organizing chapters the traditional way--by concept--this text is organized around chapter themes. Concepts are presented on a Need-to-Know basis, which more closely resembles how scientists work.
    • Learning Like Scientists
When scientists are faced with a new challenge or problem, they seek out the information they need to understand the problem and work toward a solution.
    • Concept Map
A Concept Map helps illustrate the connection between chapter ideas, i.e., soap, intermolecular forces, and bonding.
  • Assessment
    • Guided Practice
Guided Practice includes reading guides, practice exercises and chapter reviews.
    • Formative/Summative Assessment
The Formative Assessment found within each chapter includes section quizzes and online self-check quizzes.

The Summative Testing can be created through using the Exam View test generator software.
    • Performance Assessment
Performance Assessments include the student-designed experiments and the End of Chapter Projects. Each chapter ends with a lab or project that varies from traditional labs, as well as inquiry labs, research, creative writing and persuasive writing. Each assesses students' understanding in authentic setting such as a consumer or chemical engineer, product designer, etc.
  • Technology
    • Teacher Resource CD (TRCD)
Included with the Teacher Edition, the TRCD includes: labs as worksheets, quizzes, PowerPoints, Reading Guides, and practice worksheets for mathematic applications.
    • ExamView Test Generator CD
The ExamView Test Generator is a tool that can create paper, LAN-based, and Internet tests. Using the online testing features, teachers can access numerous reports that will help them focus on students' learning needs.
    • Interactive Web Site
For the student, the Interactive Web Site includes animations, interactive quizzes, and a complete Student Edition (pdf). For the teacher, it includes the Teacher Edition (pdf) and all Teacher Resource CD files.
    • NSTA SciLinks
NSTA SciLinks are integrated Web resources available to students, teachers, and parents.
